Saudi Arabia uranium and rare-earth ore discovery
Overview
Saudi Arabia has announced the discovery of approximately 110 to 114 million tonnes of ore at the Jabal Sayid project in the Medina region. The deposit contains high concentrations of rare earth elements, specifically heavy rare earths, alongside promising levels of uranium.
Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman detailed the findings, noting that the discovery supports the Kingdom’s strategy to diversify its energy mix and reduce oil dependency. Beyond direct extraction, the government is exploring uranium recovery as a byproduct of phosphoric acid production during phosphate fertilizer manufacturing. This includes experimental work conducted with the French company Orano.
The development aligns with a July 2026 civil nuclear cooperation agreement between Saudi Arabia and the United States. This partnership is intended to foster technology exchange and investment in peaceful nuclear applications, potentially allowing U.S. companies to participate in the construction of U.S.-designed reactors within the kingdom.
