School meal illness outbreak in Hungary

Overview

In late September 2026, multiple children in Budapest and Maglód were hospitalized with vomiting and diarrhea. Parents suspected food poisoning after students consumed chickpea soup and spaghetti provided by a specific catering company. While some local officials initially suggested a viral outbreak, the Budapest Government Office launched an investigation into seven institutions.

Subsequent investigations by the National Food Chain Safety Office (Nébih) revealed that tests for common gastrointestinal viruses were negative. Instead, Nébih identified bacterial counts in meals from the catering company that “far exceeded permitted levels,” including evidence of fecal contamination. Additionally, a bacterium capable of causing severe gastrointestinal symptoms was identified in one kitchen employee. The catering company has denied responsibility, maintaining that their own kitchen inspections showed no issues.
