School-related student choking fatalities

Overview

Separate incidents involving students choking on food have been reported in Indonesia and Malaysia.

In Lampung Tengah, Indonesia, a nine-year-old student died after choking on a longan seed provided through a free nutritious meal program. The Indonesian Education Monitoring Network (JPPI) has criticized the incident as a “fatal oversight regarding child safety” and is calling for legal action against the National Nutrition Agency (BGN) and the Nutrition Fulfillment Service Unit (SPPG), citing a lack of safety protocols.

In Sepang, Malaysia, a seven-year-old student passed away after an airway obstruction, possibly caused by banana or chicken, while at Sekolah Kebangsaan Dengkil. Following the incident, the Malaysian Education Minister instructed the Selangor State Education Department to ensure the family’s welfare is addressed while authorities investigate.
