School violence and misconduct in Rethymno

A series of violent incidents and misconduct allegations have emerged within the school system in Rethymno, Greece.

In late September, a student wearing attire associated with the banned organization Golden Dawn reportedly threatened peers in a school courtyard, stating, ‘I will find you outside and break your bones.’ The situation escalated into physical violence when the student and several classmates threw bottles at students from a neighboring school, resulting in one head injury. Local teachers' unions and parents' associations condemned the event as both school bullying and an act of “fascist propaganda.”

By late October, the Directorate of Primary Education launched an investigation into a female primary school student following reports of aggressive behavior. Allegations include the student chasing younger classmates while wielding a knife, committing physical assaults, and stealing personal belongings. The student also reportedly offered to provide illegal drugs to peers, claiming she could obtain them through a sibling. Local parents are reportedly considering legal action or formal complaints to ensure the safety of students and teachers as the investigation continues.
