Sea turtle rehabilitation and release efforts
Overview
Conservation efforts in the United States and Spain have resulted in the successful rehabilitation and release of sea turtles into their natural habitats.
In the United States, sea turtles injured by fishing gear were released in Gulf Shores and the Florida Keys. Conservationists emphasized that releasing mature females is vital for breeding and maintaining marine ecosystem health.
In Murcia, Spain, two loggerhead sea turtles were released into the Mediterranean Sea after being treated at the El Valle Wildlife Recovery Center. One turtle had sustained a fin injury from fishing nets, while the other was entangled in plastic bags. Regional authorities noted that since 2021, the region has returned 31 loggerhead turtles to the wild, surpassing the total number of releases from the 2010-2020 decade. This work is supported by the ‘Territorio Tortuga’ campaign, which trains local divers, fishermen, and lifeguards to report sightings.
