Seasonal snowfall and winter weather patterns in Japan

The first seasonal snowfalls have been observed across several Japanese mountains. In early October, snowcaps appeared on Mount Asahi in the Daisetsuzan mountain range, as well as on Mount Kurodake and Mount Rishiri.

By late October, the Japan Meteorological Agency confirmed first snowfalls on Mount Azuma in Fukushima Prefecture and Mount Hakusan. In Aomori Prefecture, Mount Iwaki recorded its first snow cover, and Aomori City observed its first snowfall, marking the earliest occurrence in 16 years.

A winter-type pressure pattern has brought significant cold and early seasonal changes. In both Aomori and Fukushima, sudden temperature drops have led to road closures in mountainous sections and disruptions to train schedules due to strong winds.

This season marks a procedural transition for the Japan Meteorological Agency, which has moved from manual visual inspections to utilizing automated data processing, radar, and AMeDAS technology to monitor snowfall. In response to the sudden cold, experts are advising residents to perform safety checks on heating appliances, such as air conditioners and electric carpets, to prevent malfunctions or fire hazards.
