Seattle Mariners managerial and performance decline

The Seattle Mariners experienced a significant decline during the 2026 season, moving from a successful 2025 campaign where they won the AL West to facing playoff elimination. The team struggled with offensive production from key players and inconsistent pitching, resulting in a losing record of 76-86, which placed them third in the American League West.

Following the disappointing season, manager Dan Wilson announced he will not return for the 2027 season. Wilson, a former Mariners catcher and Hall of Famer, informed players and staff during a pre-game meeting on September 27, 2026, following the season finale against the Los Angeles Angels. Key factors in the decline included offensive regression from stars such as Cal Raleigh and Julio Rodríguez, alongside bullpen struggles in the second half of the year.

Mariners President of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto stated that the organization decided a ‘new direction is best for 2027 and beyond’ after failing to meet internal expectations. While pitching coach Pete Woodworth and director of pitching strategy Trent Blank are expected to remain, the team will replace several other coaching staff members, including bench coach Manny Acta, infield coach Perry Hill, hitting coach Kevin Seitzer, and first base coach Eric Young Jr. The team’s front office, including Dipoto and general manager Justin Hollander, will remain in their positions.
