Sebastião Salgado posthumous photography exhibitions
Overview
Following the death of Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado in 2025, major retrospective exhibitions of his work have begun opening across Europe.
In Bassano del Grappa, Italy, the Museo Civico is hosting a comprehensive retrospective from October 24, 2026, to April 4, 2027. This exhibition features over 160 images from the Maison Européenne de la Photographie collection and represents the first full look at his career in Italy. His widow, Lélia Wanick Salgado, noted his ability to capture the “full spectrum of human experience.”
Simultaneously, the Fundación Canal in Madrid has opened ‘Aqua Mater’, a posthumous exhibition curated by Lélia Wanick Salgado. Running from October 28, 2026, to January 31, 2027, the display utilizes a former underground water reservoir to showcase 92 large-format black-and-white photographs. The works focus on water in various states across remote locations such as Antarctica and the Amazon, serving as an ecological reflection on climate change.
