SEC approval of Cboe KPI-linked binary options
Overview
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) authorized Cboe to list binary options tied to the key performance indicators (KPIs) of 23 publicly traded American companies. These contracts function on a yes/no basis, paying a fixed amount if specific metrics—such as revenue, earnings per share, or production levels—reach predetermined thresholds. Participating companies include Coinbase Global, Robinhood Markets, and MARA Holdings.
Following this approval, Cboe Clear U.S., LLC (CCUS) received temporary registration from the SEC to operate as a Covered Clearing Agency. This allows the entity to clear securities products in addition to its existing capacity for futures and swaps. CCUS intends to use this registration to clear the new binary securities options, which are scheduled to list on the Cboe Options Exchange and become available on Robinhood during the fourth quarter of 2026.
