Security and peace efforts in Borno State

Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has engaged in both diplomatic and religious efforts to address the security crisis in the region. In August 2026, Zulum hosted a high-level security retreat in Maiduguri with ambassadors and representatives from Sahel countries. The retreat focused on coordinating efforts against Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) through the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF).

During these discussions, Zulum advocated for a multifaceted approach that combines military action with intelligence sharing, border management, and non-kinetic measures such as deradicalization, rehabilitation, and economic development. Diplomatic participants noted that terrorist groups frequently exploit porous borders and gaps between regional groupings.

Following the security retreat, Zulum participated in the annual Maulid celebration in the Jere Local Government Area. During the event, he called on religious leaders and the Muslim community to promote unity and intensify prayers for lasting peace in Nigeria and Borno State as the administration continues reconstruction efforts.
