Security instability in Iraqi Kurdistan

Tensions have escalated in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq following a series of security incidents involving drones and explosions.

In mid-August, reports emerged of drone attacks targeting the private office of Kurdistan Regional Government Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and the residence of a local security official. While regional counter-terrorism authorities indicated that two ‘Hadid-110’ drones were launched from the Iranian side of the border, no casualties were reported. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned against ‘false-flag ploys’ intended to create tension between Iran and the region, emphasizing Iran’s support for Iraq’s territorial integrity while noting that diplomacy relies on military power.

By late August, further instability was reported in the Erbil Governorate. An explosion occurred in the city of Soran, coinciding with a drone crash near the village of Badlian. The identity of the drone and the circumstances of the crash remain unclear, with no immediate confirmation of casualties or damage. These events occur against a backdrop of frequent drone and missile attacks targeting sites associated with Iranian Kurdish opposition groups, a recurring source of friction between Tehran and local Kurdish authorities.
