Security operations and crime trends in Michoacán

Overview

In Michoacán, security authorities have reported large-scale law enforcement actions and investigations into municipal police corruption. The State Attorney General's Office is examining several municipal police forces in Salvador Escalante, Jiquilpan, and Zinapécuaro to determine if criminal responsibility reaches higher levels of local government.

A September 2026 report from the Michoacán Public Security Secretariat detailed the arrest of 406 individuals, including Manuel ‘N’, known as ‘El Señor de la T’, and three others. These operations resulted in the seizure of 1,271 kilograms of drugs, 105 firearms, 890 vehicles, and more than 4,500 cartridges. Additional raids in Morelia and Los Reyes led to the seizure of narcotics, such as methamphetamine and marijuana, as well as 154 slot machines.

Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla reported a 72.9 percent reduction in intentional homicides since the beginning of his administration, noting a drop from 259 victims in October 2021 to 70 in September 2026. Public Security Secretary José Antonio Cruz Medina added that the daily homicide average decreased from 3.7 in 2025 to 2.3 in 2026.

Recent developments in October 2026 highlight ongoing volatility. In Zamora, an armed attack at the El Nuevo Quijote bar left at least four people dead and three injured; authorities believe the violence is linked to conflicts between the CJNG, Los Caballeros Templarios, and Los Reyes cartels. Furthermore, the State Prosecutor's Office executed 22 search warrants in Morelia and Los Reyes regarding extortion, and authorities are currently tracking over 600 extortion calls to combat telephone fraud. Intelligence efforts have geolocalized several of these calls to penitentiary centers, including Altamira, Matamoros, and Santa Martha Acatitla, with many calls originating from area codes in Mexico City, Jalisco, and Edomex.
