Seemapuri building collapse in Delhi

Overview

On October 7, a four-storey residential building collapsed in the New Seemapuri area of northeast Delhi near Idgah Machhli Mandi. The incident resulted in at least four deaths, including a pregnant woman and two children, and left eight people injured. Rescue operations were conducted by the Delhi Fire Service, Delhi Police, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).

While the exact cause was initially under investigation, reports suggested the structure may have been weakened by recent tremors or its construction on a small 25-square-yard plot. Following the incident, Delhi Home Minister Ashish Sood ordered a magisterial inquiry to be conducted by the district magistrate (North-East).

The inquiry aims to establish accountability for negligence or safety violations. Preliminary findings indicate that demolition work using heavy machinery at an adjacent unauthorized construction site may have triggered the collapse through vibrations. The investigation will examine potential violations of building codes by property owners and tenants, as well as possible lapses by government departments and civic agencies.
