The municipality of Los Santos in the Santander department of Colombia has been identified as a major seismic zone, often described as the “seismic nest of Bucaramanga.” Local reports indicate that the area, home to approximately 12,000 inhabitants, experiences between 12 and 20 tremors daily, most of which typically register between 3 and 4 on the Richter scale.

Data from the Servicio Geológico Colombiano suggests that a large majority of Colombia’s seismic events originate in the Los Santos area. While many tremors are superficial, recent activity included a seismic event measuring 4.2 magnitude. A subsequent moderate earthquake measuring 3.4 magnitude was reported with an epicenter near Los Santos; however, risk management agencies reported no serious injuries or structural damage.
