Peru has experienced frequent seismic events throughout 2026. In June, a magnitude 4.8 earthquake occurred 86 km west of Callao. Throughout August and September, tremors were recorded near Vitor, Chilca, Samanco, Jaén, and Salaverry. On September 24, a magnitude 4.4 earthquake struck near Huacho, and a magnitude 3.9 tremor was recorded in San Martín. By late September, the National Seismological Center reported 697 earthquakes for the year. Notable high-magnitude events included a 7.2 magnitude earthquake in Ayacucho on August 20 and a 5.4 magnitude earthquake in Junín on July 18, which caused six fatalities. On September 29, a 5.2 magnitude tremor occurred in the Loreto region. In October, activity continued with a magnitude 5.1 earthquake in Camaná, Arequipa, and a magnitude 3.8 earthquake near Tarma, Junín. On October 2, two tremors struck the La Libertad region (magnitude 4.1 and 4.0), and a magnitude 3.6 earthquake hit Huarochirí, Lima. On October 14, a magnitude 3.6 earthquake struck near Chosica, described as a “light movement perceived by some people inside buildings.” ~~Most recently, on~~ On October 23, a magnitude 4 earthquake occurred near Andoas in the Loreto ~~department;~~ department.
