Seismic activity in Sicily

In August 2026, the Sicily region experienced multiple seismic events. On August 18, two earthquakes struck near Oliveri in the province of Messina, measuring 3.7 and 3.3 magnitude respectively. The tremors were felt along the Tyrrhenian coast, though no injuries or property damage were reported.

Later in the month, on August 31, a magnitude 3.3 earthquake occurred in Petralia Sottana within the province of Palermo. The epicenter was located approximately 2 kilometers from the town center at a depth of 9 kilometers. While the tremor caused alarm among residents, authorities reported no injuries or structural damage.

In early September, the Nebrodi region in the province of Messina experienced two additional earthquakes of magnitude 3.1 within a two-day period. The first occurred on September 4 near Caronia, felt across 14 municipalities including San Fratello and Acquedolci. A second tremor of the same magnitude struck west of San Fratello the following afternoon. The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) reported no damage to people or property following these events.
