The seismic swarm in Granada, which began on August 14, 2026, continues to impact infrastructure and local administration. While the frequency of tremors has trended downward since the magnitude 5.0 earthquake in Alhendín on August 15, the economic and humanitarian consequences are becoming more defined. In the Zaidín district, 21 buildings have been classified as “red” due to serious non-structural damage, resulting in the evacuation of 85 homes and the placement of 24 people in emergency shelters. Political friction has intensified as the Socialist Municipal Group criticized the city council for failing to issue official evacuation certificates, which are essential for residents to manage rental contracts and access aid. Institutional damage assessments are also rising. The University of Granada has finalized a report detailing 6.8 million euros in damages—more than double the initial 3 million euro estimate. The university submitted its formal claim to the Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros (CCS) on September 11. As of late September, the total impact of approximately 1,700 earthquakes has left more than 200 residents displaced. In response to the crisis, VOX party representatives across numerous municipalities—including Maracena, La Zubia, Ogíjares, Armilla, Churriana de la Vega, Cúllar Vega, Alhendín, Otura, Gójar, and Las Gabias—have filed motions requesting aid from the Junta de Andalucía, the Provincial Council of Granada, and the Spanish Government. These motions propose extraordinary exemptions from the Property Tax (IBI) and a 95% reduction in the Tax on Constructions, Installations, and Works (ICIO). On September 24, the Regional Government of Andalusia announced an 8 million euro aid package to assist with the rehabilitation of homes and community buildings damaged by the seismic activity. This plan may include 50% advances to property owners before repairs begin to mitigate high community fees and may cover professional fees for property administrators.
