Seismic activity in the Americas and Pacific

Overview

Seismic activity across the Americas and the Pacific has triggered various emergency responses and humanitarian crises. In Cuba, civil defense officials have focused on preparedness, urging citizens to assemble emergency kits and identify safe shelters to build community resilience.

In Venezuela, authorities reported that tremors caused wildlife, including snakes and scorpions, to flee their habitats and enter residential areas. The impact of the seismic activity is further illustrated by the displacement of individuals. Following twin earthquakes in La Guaira, Venezuela, measuring magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5 on June 24, survivors fled to Colombia. The June 24 quakes resulted in over 6,300 deaths and left thousands homeless.

On August 10, a magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck Colombia, with its epicenter in Chocó and significant impact in Cali. This Colombian disaster has reported at least 285 fatalities, 4,000 injuries, and hundreds of missing persons. In Cali, the collapse of residential buildings has claimed numerous lives, including a Venezuelan family of three and the Saavedra family, where only one of three sisters survived.

The interconnected tragedies have deeply affected migrant populations. Some families, such as the Delfín brothers, fled the destruction in Venezuela only to experience the Colombian earthquake just days after arriving in Cali. In response to the regional seismic activity, local authorities in San Rafael, Argentina, have offered psychological support to the resident Venezuelan and Colombian communities.
