Seismic activity in Uttarakhand, India

Overview

A series of seismic events occurred in the Uttarakhand region of India in October 2026.

On October 6, a 4.9-magnitude earthquake struck the Chamoli district at a depth of approximately 13 km. The tremors were felt in several districts, including Bageshwar, Pithoragarh, Champawat, Rudraprayag, and Chamoli, as well as in Rishikesh, Badrinath, Haldwani, and parts of the Delhi-NCR region.

On October 10, a 4.2-magnitude earthquake hit the Uttarkashi district. The National Centre for Seismology reported the epicenter was located approximately two kilometers northwest of Uttarkashi city at a depth of 11 km. The tremors caused panic in Uttarkashi town and the Yamunotri valley, prompting residents to flee to open spaces. The Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority (USDMA) reported no loss of life or damage to property.

On October 25, a 3.7-magnitude earthquake struck the Pithoragarh district at a depth of approximately 11 km, with an epicenter located near the Uttarkashi district headquarters. While the tremor caused momentary panic, no immediate casualties or structural damage were confirmed.

These events have renewed discussions regarding seismic zoning in the Himalayan region. Under the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) seismic zoning map related to the new code-2025, there are provisions to reclassify Himalayan states like Uttarakhand into Zone-6, an extremely sensitive category, moving from previous classifications of Zone-4 and Zone-5. This shift aims to enforce stricter earthquake-resistant construction standards.

Experts note that the Himalayan region remains highly vulnerable to such activity due to the collision of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates.
