SENASA livestock management and sanitary measures

Overview

The National Animal Health Service (SENASA) has implemented various sanitary and regulatory measures regarding livestock management.

In Costa Rica, SENASA announced an exceptional measure under Sanitary Resolution SENASA 029-2026 to allow cattle owners to regularize adult bovines that were not previously registered in the National Traceability System. Under this resolution, producers are prohibited from moving livestock until registration in the Trazar-Agro system is finalized. The process requires the purchase of Official Individual Identification Devices and verification by SENASA personnel.

In Argentina, SENASA has reinforced movement controls through the National Integrated Control and Eradication Plan for Bovine Ticks. Established via Resolution 655/2026, this strategy requires inspections at the origin site by accredited veterinarians before the transport of cattle, buffalo, or horses. If live ticks are detected, livestock is rejected from transit; if found during transit or at a destination, animals must return to their origin within 48 hours, and owners must perform bioassays to address parasite resistance to veterinary products.
