Senegalese and Gambian irregular migration via Atlantic
Overview
Migrants from Senegal and the Gambia continue to attempt sea voyages toward Spain using pirogues. In early October, 190 Senegalese migrants, including approximately 60 minors, arrived in Dakhla, Morocco, after departing from Saint-Louis, Senegal, and the Gambia. Authorities noted an increase in irregular migration attempts from these coasts during August and September, resulting in the arrest of about 30 organizers and captains.
On October 20, a vessel carrying 171 migrants—comprising 37 Senegalese, 114 Gambians, and one Guinean—ran aground at Pilote Bar in Gandiol, near Saint-Louis, Senegal. The group, which included 12 children, was rescued by local fishermen after departing the Gambian coast on October 15. While seven individuals required medical treatment, no deaths were reported. Security forces seized the vessel and fuel, and while two individuals are in custody, the suspected smuggler and captain remain at large.
