Sentencing of Léo Derik for rape

Overview

Léo Derik, a 21-year-old left-back for the Brazilian football club Athletico Paranaense, has been sentenced in a first-instance court in Curitiba to 13 years in prison. The sentence, handed down by the 2nd Domestic and Family Violence Court, follows two counts of rape against a former partner occurring in December 2023 and February 2024.

The court ordered Derik to pay R$ 20,000 in compensation to the victim. While the Public Ministry had previously requested acquittal due to what they described as a “lack of sufficient evidence,” the judge ruled that the victim’s testimony was consistent and supported by witness statements and psychological reports.

Derik maintains that the encounters were consensual and remains free pending appeal. Athletico Paranaense has stated it is aware of the decision but will not comment due to judicial secrecy. Following the ruling, coach Odair Hellmann noted that while the player continues to train, technical decisions regarding match participation remain with the coaching staff and the club.
