Señor de los Milagros religious traditions
Overview
The devotion to the Señor de los Milagros, or Cristo Morado, is a significant religious tradition in Latin America. Originating in 1651 in Lima, Peru, the cult grew after an adobe wall bearing an image of a crucified Christ remained intact following a devastating earthquake in 1655. This event led to the figure being declared the Patron of Lima, with traditions closely associated with the color purple and the Monastery of the Nazarenas.
Recent observances include a ceremony by the Alianza Lima football club at the Sanctuary of Las Nazarenas, attended by players and staff. During this event, the club announced that the Venerable Convent of Las Nazarenas Carmelitas Descalzas would be named an honorary member of the club.
In Azángaro, local authorities and devotees also held a procession to receive the image, with leaders calling for faith and unity during the ceremony.
