Diplomatic and legal tensions escalate after Mladić funeral

The diplomatic and legal fallout from the state funeral of convicted war criminal Ratko Mladić has intensified across the Balkans and within the European Union. In Montenegro, the Higher State Prosecutor’s Office in Podgorica has opened a case against Metropolitan Metodije of Budimlje and Nikšić for allegedly inciting national, racial, and religious ~~hatred. This investigation follows~~ hatred following remarks ~~made during a memorial service where the Metropolitan described~~ describing Mladić as ~~possessing the “wonderful and sacred qualities of Serbian warriors and knights” and as~~ a “holy Serbian knight.” While the Podgorica office pursues the Mladić-related case, the Higher State Prosecutor's Office in Bijelo Polje rejected criminal charges against Metropolitan Metodije regarding previous speeches praising World War II commander Pavle Đurišić, determining those remarks did not constitute a criminal offense. Separately, reports indicate Metropolitan Joanikije of Montenegro and the Littoral may face an internal investigation by the Serbian Orthodox Church concerning administrative and financial operations.
