Overview
In late July 2026 Serbian authorities again activated heat‑wave measures. Prime Minister Đuro Macut told citizens that the national power grid remained stable and that monitoring agencies – Elektroprivreda Srbije, Elektromreža Srbije and the relevant ministry – were reviewing the situation daily. He warned that the next twenty days were critical because a prolonged heat wave, extremely low river levels and a surge in electricity consumption threatened both Serbia and the wider region, and he urged people to turn off unused devices and use air‑conditioners prudently.
The Republic Hydrometeorological Institute issued a warning for 5‑8 August, forecasting nationwide highs of 35‑38 °C with local peaks of up to 40 °C and tropical‑night conditions in Vojvodina and Belgrade. Health officials highlighted heightened risks of heat‑stroke, dehydration and sunburn for children, the elderly, pregnant women and outdoor workers, and noted that the heat strained the electricity grid and increased fire danger.
Neighbouring Croatia declared a red meteorological alarm for several cities, while Bosnia and Herzegovina faced temperatures up to 43 °C, raising drought and agricultural concerns. Local authorities in Serbia, including the SSP party in Niš and the Ministry of Agriculture, set up cooling zones, extra water supplies and fire‑prevention measures. Companies such as Serbia Ziđin Koper continued to provide extra breaks, hydration stations and fruit for outdoor workers.
The combined heat, low water levels and rising electricity demand remain a serious challenge for Serbia and the region.
