Serbian football financing reforms

Serbian football, the nation’s most popular sport, has long struggled with limited commercial resources and heavy reliance on gambling‑related sponsorships. A July 29 overview highlighted the historic financial damage from the 1990s breakup of Yugoslavia and called for a stable model that reduces gambling ties, boosts youth development, and restores long‑term competitiveness.

Two days later, the Football Association of Serbia moved toward concrete solutions. It signed an exclusive sponsorship and technical cooperation deal with betting firm SuperBet, providing clubs with equipment and match‑day funding. At the same time, the association amended its disciplinary regulations to introduce a “sporting successor” rule, making any club that inherits a dissolved predecessor’s identity liable for the predecessor’s debts. The measures aim to curb debt evasion, align with FIFA standards, and improve the financial health of Serbian clubs.
