Serbian military and nuclear development

Serbia is advancing its strategic industrial and energy capabilities through new military and nuclear initiatives.

In September 2026, President Aleksandar Vučić announced plans to begin serial production of long-range ballistic missiles within one year. While the country already produces short-range missiles, Vučić indicated that the transition to long-range capabilities represents significant technological progress. He has invited Uzbekistan to cooperate in this development, though he noted Serbia is prepared to launch the project independently.

Simultaneously, the Serbian government has launched the first phase of a national nuclear energy program following the repeal of a long-standing moratorium on nuclear construction. The program follows a three-phase plan involving feasibility assessments, site selection, and eventual construction, with potential operations beginning after 2040. The government is exploring small modular reactors and has signed agreements with France’s EDF and the French Development Agency to support the initiative. While the program follows IAEA methodology, experts have raised concerns regarding the shortage of specialized personnel and the massive funding required.
