Serbian political controversy and regional tensions

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has faced political scrutiny regarding the 2011 arrest of Ratko Mladić. Srđan Milivojević, president of the Democratic Party, alleged that Vučić shared intelligence concerning Mladić’s location and financing with a former chief of staff instead of the judiciary. Bruno Vekarić of the War Crimes Prosecutor's Office denied these claims, stating the prosecution received no such information from the President.

As the situation evolved, Vučić announced plans to deliver a speech in New York regarding the historical challenges faced by Serbia since the 1990s. Concurrently, he addressed the return of Ratko Mladić’s remains to Serbia, noting that the state would provide logistical support for the expected large-scale funeral. Security services anticipate tens of thousands of attendees for the ceremony.

This period also saw heightened regional tensions, as Vučić engaged in a verbal dispute with Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković over the glorification of Mladić. Vučić responded by urging Croatian leadership to address their own historical handling of fascist symbols, suggesting they ‘look in the mirror’ regarding their stance on anti-fascism.

Additionally, Vučić announced the launch of a new YouTube podcast titled ‘podkAVst’ to discuss culture, sports, and history, with an inaugural episode featuring basketball coach Miroslav Muta Nikolić. Amidst these developments, the Slavko Ćuruvija Foundation reported 107 incidents of verbal attacks against journalists in August, attributing 22 of those incidents to Vučić.
