Serbian political crisis over government legitimacy

In late July 2026, opposition leader Miroslav Aleksić accused Prime Minister Đuro Macut of acting as President Aleksandar Vučić’s puppet, citing a series of infrastructure failures such as the railway‑canopy collapse in Novi Sad, the stalled Savamala project and the Stari Savski bridge. Aleksić delivered a lengthy parliamentary speech and helped launch a no‑confidence motion signed by 62 opposition MPs, alleging a “General Staff” scandal and widespread corruption. The ruling coalition expected the motion to be rejected, but the debate signaled growing parliamentary dissent.

A week later, newly appointed MP Anđela Ruvidić of the Green‑Left Front reiterated the opposition’s stance, declaring the Macut government lacking both political and moral legitimacy. She argued that the administration continued the same pattern of corruption, violence and citizen neglect that has persisted for 14 years under previous ruling parties. Ruvidić pledged to focus on public infrastructure, water supply, environmental protection and responsible investment, further broadening the critique beyond the no‑confidence vote to a systemic challenge of the government’s right to govern.
