The 2026 summer travel season concluded with significant traffic volumes and ongoing infrastructure maintenance. Anas reported a total of 485 million transits on its network between 16 July and 6 September. While traffic was more widely distributed over time than in previous years, volumes remained intense, particularly on routes connecting tourist areas to urban centers. To manage the final influx, Anas maintained the suspension of approximately 83% of its active construction sites through 7 September. Environmental factors also influenced the season, as the Mediterranean recorded its warmest July since 1993, with average sea surface temperatures reaching approximately 27°C. This sustained warmth has been noted to influence autumn weather patterns. Looking toward September, Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) has scheduled major upgrades. Beyond the previously noted work on the Genova-Pisa-Roma line, significant maintenance is planned for the Tyrrhenian railway line between Grosseto and Orbetello during the weekends of 5–6 and 12–13 September. This €5 million project involves replacing switches at Alberese station, upgrading signaling and electric traction, and maintaining the Osa River railway bridge. These works will suspend circulation on the Grosseto-Orbetello stretch, requiring replacement bus services. Long-distance Frecciabianca and Frecciarossa services on the Rome-Genoa route will be diverted via Florence Campo Marte, resulting in the cancellation of stops between Livorno and Civitavecchia. Further infrastructure maintenance is scheduled for mid-September. Between 14 and 18 September, nighttime closures will affect major motorways. The A1 Milano-Napoli motorway will see a closure between Chiusi Chianciano Terme and Fabro toward Rome overnight on 14–15 September. Additionally, the A11 Firenze-Pisa motorway will undergo several nighttime closures near Prato for bridge inspections and paving works between 14 and 17 September. Further nighttime disruptions are scheduled for the A-12 motorway.
