Setúbal Diocese 2026‑27 pastoral initiatives
Entities: Diocese of Setúbal · Montijo · Seixal · Diocese of Setúbal · Barreiro‑Moita
Overview
In late July 2026 the Diocese of Setúbal formalised a new pastoral plan for 2026‑2027. The Diocesan Pastoral Council, chaired by Cardinal Américo Aguiar, approved the document “Discernir para Servir com Esperança”, structuring its work around synodality, proximity to the vulnerable, charity and solidarity, and youth vocations.
Two days later the diocese announced an expanded formation programme, re‑opening the Escola da Fé e dos Ministérios to train priests, deacons, seminarians and lay pastoral agents. The call emphasised reaching remote areas and overcoming mobility barriers so that more faithful could deepen their knowledge and pastoral competence.
The following day the plan was presented in detail, highlighting its response to “new poverty” and social exclusion. Specific actions include parish visits to Seixal, Barreiro‑Moita and Montijo, strengthened solidarity networks to address labour precarity, migration pressures and housing shortages, and a focus on empowering youth ahead of the 2027 World Youth Day. The agenda also marks the centenary of Setúbal’s first bishop in January 2027.
