Severe weather and flooding in Chile

Overview

In early September, Chilean authorities issued weather alerts for the Los Lagos and Biobío regions. In Los Lagos, Senapred warned of potential tornadoes or waterspouts following sightings of funnel clouds over Lake Llanquihue. In Biobío, a preventive early warning was activated due to forecasted intense winds reaching up to 100 km/h in mountainous areas.

By late September, heavy rainfall in the Biobío Region resulted in significant impact, affecting more than 1,400 people and causing damage to 391 homes. Flooding occurred in Concepción and Hualpén, with reports of sewage water entering properties and mass earth movements in the San Jorge and El Pino sectors. Additionally, six people were injured in Antuco when a metal structure collapsed.

In early October, Senapred issued a new Preventive Early Warning for the Biobío Region due to an incoming frontal system. Forecasts predicted up to 40 mm of rainfall and wind gusts of 70 km/h. Authorities warned of moderate risks regarding thunderstorms, abnormal swells, waterspouts along the coast, and mass movements of earth.
