Severe weather and flooding in Italy
Overview
Severe weather incidents across various Italian regions have caused significant infrastructure damage and utility disruptions. In early October, suspected waterspouts and heavy winds in areas such as Mesagne, Battipaglia, and Naples resulted in fallen trees, power outages, and injuries to pedestrians.
By late October, heavy rainfall led to major flooding in the Lazio region, specifically affecting Latina and the Agro Pontino area. Intense precipitation was recorded, including 105 mm in Sezze and 98 mm in Borgo San Michele. The flooding inundated homes, schools, and commercial centers, such as the Latinafiori shopping mall, which was forced to close. Several neighborhoods, including the Goretti district near the local hospital, experienced power outages.
Infrastructure damage has expanded to include the collapse of a section of the lungomare in Fogliano due to erosion and a sewage pipe failure in Albano Laziale that necessitated road closures. Transportation remains disrupted, with the Roma-Napoli railway line via Formia suspended between Sezze Romano and Priverno.
In response, Mayor Matilde Celentano stated that the administration is evaluating a request for a state of natural disaster to be submitted to the Lazio Region. While some residents have criticized the administration for not closing schools during the orange weather alert, officials maintain they are working to restore safety. Local authorities, including Civil Protection, Firefighters, and local police, continue to conduct inspections and coordinate responses to manage road closures and safety concerns.
