Severe weather and flooding in Puebla

Severe weather events in Puebla, Mexico, have caused widespread disruption to transportation, infrastructure, and residential areas.

Initial reports focused on a severe hailstorm and heavy rains in the Puebla metropolitan area. In Coronango, hail accumulation reached up to 75 centimeters, trapping motorists and requiring the rescue of 38 people. The storm impacted industrial operations, specifically at the Volkswagen plant, and caused electricity outages and drainage failures in local neighborhoods.

Subsequent heavy rainfall expanded the impact to the Sierra Norte region, affecting 10 municipalities including Huitzilan, Hermenegildo Galeana, San Felipe Tepatlán, Tepango de Rodríguez, Ahuacatlán, Camocuautla, Tepetzintla, Zapotitlán de Méndez, Tlatlauquitepec, and Amixtlán. State Secretary of Government Samuel Aguilar Pala reported 18 instances of road damage, including two asphalt collapses, sections requiring reconstruction, and areas with provisional crossings. Amixtlán has been identified as the most severely impacted area.

In addition to infrastructure damage, eight homes were damaged, prompting officials to propose the relocation of affected families to safer ground. Governor Alejandro Armenta Mier has visited the region to oversee machinery interventions. Emergency shelters remain active, with support provided by the Federal Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport, state infrastructure teams, the Defense Forces, and the National Guard.
