Severe weather and DANA Adam impact in Spain

Overview

As of October 16, the weather situation has intensified with the arrival of ‘Adam’, the first high-impact DANA (isolated high-altitude depression) of the 2026-2027 season, as identified by the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET). The storm, driven by an upper-level depression and moist Mediterranean air, is expected to bring intense, persistent rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds through at least Monday, October 19.

Severe weather warnings have expanded across the Mediterranean coast. Red alerts are in effect for the Marina Alta and the southern coast of Valencia, where rainfall could reach 200 to 300 liters per square meter within 24 hours. These conditions are described as posing an “extraordinary danger” with the potential for catastrophic impacts on infrastructure and vulnerable populations. In the Valencian Community, municipalities including Aldaia, Torrent, and Gandia have activated flood barriers and emergency coordination centers, while the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) has suspended all activities across its campuses.

Orange and yellow alerts cover Catalonia, the Balearic Islands, and parts of Murcia. In the Balearic Islands, Ibiza and Formentera remain under orange alerts for intense storms and persistent rain. In Andalusia, the regional government has activated a pre-emergency flood plan, and in Almería, over 150 incidents, including flooding and vehicle displacements, have already been reported. Authorities have issued Es-Alert mobile notifications to residents in high-risk zones, advising them to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from riverbeds and ravines, and seek higher ground. In response to the red alert, the Football Federation of the Valencian Community has suspended all official and friendly matches in the provinces of Alicante and Valencia for Sunday.
