In early September 2026, child rights commissions in Delhi, including the DCPCR and NCW, launched investigations into several incidents of child abuse and death. These cases included the alleged sexual assault of a three-year-old by a school bus driver in Bawana, the gang-rape of a 16-year-old on a bus in Noida, and the death of a student in Vinod Nagar following alleged teacher punishment. By late September, the Supreme Court of India intervened by taking suo motu cognisance of recurring sexual assault cases across the Delhi-NCR region. The Court addressed incidents such as the gang rape of a 17-year-old by individuals posing as police officers. The Bench characterized these events as a ‘systematic failure’ by law enforcement and administrative authorities to maintain public safety in spaces like buses, parks, and roads. The Court directed the registration of a public interest litigation and emphasized that the right to live without fear of violence is a fundamental right under Article 21 of the Constitution. During proceedings, the Bench of Justices J. B. Pardiwala and K. Vinod Chandran drew parallels to the 2012 Nirbhaya case, questioning if administrative systems had made meaningful progress. The Court specifically noted incidents such as the gang rape of a 17-year-old at Aastha Kunj Park and the assault of a minor on a sleeper bus from Greater Noida.
