Sexual assault attempts in Rome involving the ‘Signal for___

Overview

In August 2026, two separate incidents occurred in Rome involving minors using the international ‘Signal for Help’ hand gesture to alert police to sexual assault attempts.

In the first instance, a 14-year-old girl signaled distress while traveling in a vehicle from Zagarolo to Rome. Police intercepted the car after noticing the gesture, leading to the arrest of a 47-year-old Romanian national, who was the partner of the girl’s mother. The suspect was transferred to Regina Coeli prison. Her mother has since filed charges.

Shortly after, a 12-year-old girl in the eastern outskirts of Rome used the same signal to alert a passing patrol near a mobile phone shop. The girl reported being molested by her mother’s 47-year-old partner, who was reportedly intoxicated. The man was arrested on charges of aggravated sexual violence and ordered to be held at Rebibbia prison. Following the rescue, the minor was placed under protection and provided with medical and psychological support.
