Sexual harassment allegations at Jawaharlal Nehru University

Overview

At least 10 students at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) have accused a professor of sexual harassment, including allegations of inappropriate sexual advances and lewd remarks made during classes. Some students reported that the professor invited them to his campus residence where misconduct occurred. While the university’s Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) began an investigation, Delhi Police noted that no formal police complaint had been filed at that time.

The situation escalated when the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) took suo motu cognisance of the matter. This action followed social media reports suggesting that students had submitted a formal complaint to Vice Chancellor Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit in May 2026 but received no appropriate response. The DCW has demanded an ‘Action Taken Report’ from the JNU administration within three days to clarify if the complaints were referred to the ICC as mandated by the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) Act.
