Seyðisfjörður aquaculture licensing dispute
Overview
In Seyðisfjörður, Iceland, the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority (MAST) and the Environment and Energy Agency issued operating licenses to the aquaculture company Kaldvík for a 10,000-tonne sea cage farm. The agencies stated the decision was based on existing legislation and that the application met all legal requirements for risk and capacity assessments.
The decision has faced significant local opposition, including a nationwide collection of approximately 12,000 signatures against the project. The Múlaþing local government indicated the decision appeared to contradict previous political promises regarding stricter aquaculture regulations. The local association VÁ – félag um vernd fjarðar has announced plans to appeal the decision to the Environmental and Natural Resources Appeals Committee. Additionally, the company must still obtain building permits from Múlaþing for land-based structures.
