Shane Lowry leads Irish Open amid spectator controversy

Shane Lowry established a lead at the Amgen Irish Open held at Trump International Golf Links Doonbeg. After an opening round of 67, Lowry recorded a course-record 62 in the second round, bringing his total score to 11-under par.

Following the second round, Lowry held a three-stroke advantage over competitors Haotong Li, Jacob Skov Olesen, and Niklas Norgård, who were all at 8-under par. Padraig Harrington commented on Lowry’s form, stating, “He’s the best version of himself I’ve seen... he is really very, very secure with what he does.”

During the third round, Lowry’s performance was overshadowed by controversy involving spectators. After a tee shot landed in the rough, Lowry reportedly responded to a warning from his caddie by saying, “They deserve to get hit.” The remark triggered social media backlash, with some fans labeling the comment “scandalous,” while others defended the golfer by citing the pressure of leading his national tournament.

Lowry, who previously won the tournament as an amateur in 2009, has expressed a desire to secure his second Irish Open title. While Lowry maintains a commanding lead, other notable players such as Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm remain in the competition, and Swedish player Jens Dantorp has shown strong form, sitting in a tie for tenth place.
