Shanghai has implemented several new initiatives to support international tourism during the ‘Shanghai Summer 2026’ consumption season, which runs from July to October.

To assist travelers, the city launched 100 AI-powered service terminals featuring an AI agent named Hu Xiaoyou. These terminals provide real-time translation, navigation, and personalized itineraries, supporting 10 languages and over 120 currencies. The system utilizes a database of 84,000 entries to assist visitors in major hotels and commercial districts.

Complementing these technological tools, the city has focused on improving payment and hospitality infrastructure. Visa is expanding its contactless ‘Tap to Pay’ network, while China UnionPay’s Nihao China App integrates navigation and translation with QR code payments. Additionally, the Bank of China Shanghai Branch has upgraded its Tax Refund 2.0 programme, introducing self-service machines at hotels, supermarkets, and attractions to streamline the refund process.
