Shardiya Navratri 2026 observance

The Shardiya Navratri festival for 2026 is scheduled to begin on Sunday, October 11, following the conclusion of Pitru Paksha and the observance of Mahalaya on October 10. The nine-day observance involves the worship of nine different forms of Goddess Durga, beginning with Maa Shailputri on the first day via rituals such as Ghatasthapana or Kalash Sthapana.

Key dates for the observance include Saptami (Maa Kaalratri) on October 17, Ashtami (Maa Mahagauri) on October 18, and Maha Navami (Maa Siddhidatri) on October 19. Due to specific lunar calendar alignments, both Durga Ashtami and Maha Navami rituals are expected to coincide on October 19, leading toward Vijayadashami (Dussehra) on October 20.

Because the festival commences on a Sunday, religious tradition suggests the Goddess will arrive on an elephant (Gaja), which is considered an auspicious sign signifying prosperity, peace, and abundant rainfall.

Devotees observing fasts may prepare specific sattvic offerings such as Sabudana Kheer, Kuttu ka Halwa, Coconut Ladoo, and Makhana Kheer. Additionally, Vastu traditions suggest planting specific plants like Hibiscus, Parijat, or Tulsi during this time to invite positive energy into the home.
