Shell energy expansion and market integration
Overview
Shell has expanded its energy footprint through asset acquisitions and strategic market advocacy in South America.
In early September, Shell reached an agreement with bp to acquire exploration stakes in two major regions. In Brazil, Shell Brasil Petróleo will take a 50% interest in the Tupinambá exploration block in the Santos Basin, while bp remains the operator. In the United States, Shell Offshore will acquire a 30% interest in five leases within the Conifer exploration prospect in the Gulf of Mexico.
Later in the month, Shell Energy Brasil shifted focus toward regional market development. During the ROG.e 2026 event, President Rodrigo Soares highlighted the potential for gas market integration within the Cone Sul region. Soares noted that while regional flows exist for Shell in Argentina and Chile, further infrastructure and regulatory predictability are required to facilitate gas flows into Brazil via routes through Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, or Rio Grande do Sul.
