Shiga Prefecture disaster preparedness and infrastructure
Overview
Shiga Prefecture has initiated plans to enhance regional disaster resilience through infrastructure development and resource management.
In October 2026, the prefecture formulated a draft concept for a new integrated government facility in Takashima City. This project aims to consolidate the Takashima Government Office, the Health and Welfare Office, and the Takashima Police Station into a single 7,600 square meter building. Designed to serve as a disaster response base, the facility is intended to improve inter-sector coordination during emergencies while reducing maintenance costs. Construction is projected for 2030 to 2031, with operations expected to begin in fiscal 2032.
Following a request from the Disaster Management Agency, the prefecture also reviewed local emergency preparedness in November 2026. Assessments indicated that residents currently maintain approximately one day of essential supplies. In response, the prefecture plans to collaborate with municipalities to inspect stockpiling levels and ensure households can better withstand logistics or retail disruptions during disasters.
