Shiv Sena (UBT) criticism of Indian economic growth

The Shiv Sena (UBT) has launched criticisms against the central government regarding India’s economic performance. In an editorial in the party mouthpiece ‘Saamana’, the group argued that the reported 7.8 per cent quarterly GDP growth does not reflect the economic hardships of citizens, accusing the government of “grandstanding” while ignoring joblessness, inflation, and the falling value of the rupee.

The party highlighted several indicators of distress, including the reliance of 85 crore citizens on free food grains, 7,000 farmer suicides in a single year, and rising costs for essential goods like milk and onions. They also noted significant unpaid government bills to contractors in Maharashtra.

Following these criticisms, leader Aditya Thackeray further challenged the government’s GDP claims during a public movement in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Thackeray questioned why economic growth has not translated into improved livelihoods or employment, specifically pointing to industrial decline in the Marathwada region where 211 companies have reportedly closed or relocated. He also called for inspections of the education system to address allegations of deceptive enrollment practices.
