Shooting investigations in Brazil

Authorities in Brazil are investigating separate incidents involving the shooting of 18-year-old women.

In Sobradinho II, Distrito Federal, police are investigating the death of Byanca de Araújo Leão, who was shot in the head during a gathering. While investigators initially considered feminicide, the Civil Police of the Distrito Federal have ruled out that motive, instead investigating the death as homicide to determine if the shot was accidental or intentional. Three adolescents, aged 16 and 17, were apprehended and charged with an infraction analogous to homicide. Police also seized four firearms belonging to the father of one of the suspects.

In Rio de Janeiro, police are investigating the shooting of Anabella Silva Cardoso in the Rio das Pedras community. The victim was shot in the head and underwent brain death protocols. Anderson Barbosa Alencar was arrested and is accused of attempted femicide and illegal possession of firearms. Alencar claimed the shot was accidental, but investigators reported inconsistencies and discovered a pistol, a revolver, ammunition, and magazines hidden on a roof. Authorities stated the charge may be upgraded to consummated femicide if the victim's death is confirmed.
