Shopping center fires in Latin America

Overview

Recent incidents involving fires at shopping centers have been reported in Venezuela and Colombia.

In Miranda state, Venezuela, a fire broke out on October 17 at the Galerías Los Naranjos shopping center. The blaze originated in the electrical plant room of a ground-floor supermarket. Local authorities, including the Caracas Fire Department, controlled the flames by midnight, preventing casualties. The Mayor of El Hatillo noted that a significant electrical fluctuation in Caracas may have caused the failure.

In Bogotá, Colombia, a fire occurred on October 22 at the Gran Estación shopping center. The fire started in a duct within the Mi Gran Parrilla Boyacense restaurant. Firefighters brought the blaze under control during its initial stages, and no injuries were reported. Investigations are ongoing to determine if the cause was related to a boiler or extraction system.
