Shopping Popular reconstruction in Cuiabá
Overview
Following a fire on July 15, 2024, that destroyed the Shopping Popular complex, Mayor Abilio Brunini of Cuiabá proposed a draft law to facilitate the site’s reconstruction. The proposal sought to grant the Shopping Popular Association a 30-year surface-rights lease to provide legal certainty for the rebuilding process.
On August 12, 2024, the Cuiabá City Council unanimously approved the bill. The legislation grants the Association the right to manage the commercial center and maintain the adjacent Dom Aquino Complex, including the Manoel Soares de Campos Sports Complex. The law also requires the reservation of at least 100 square meters for a professional education center or other public interest social equipment, with the Cuiabá City Hall maintaining oversight of these obligations.
