Shree Cement project disputes in Meghalaya

Residents and landowners in Meghalaya are contesting the Shree Cement Integrated Cement Plant and limestone mining projects in East Jaintia Hills.

In Daistong village, residents testified before the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) regarding allegations that they were barred from a December 2025 public hearing by masked individuals. Villagers expressed concerns that the project threatens water sources, air quality, agricultural land, and local caves.

Simultaneously, landowners and farmers from Shnongrim village have submitted a formal representation to a state fact-finding committee. They assert that the proposed mining site at Lum Syrman is ancestral farmland held by 117 families under customary rights, rather than ownerless land. These residents also alleged that a July 31 public hearing was compromised by approximately 40-50 police personnel who reportedly blocked roads and intimidated villagers to prevent participation. The group is demanding a thorough verification of land records and an investigation into the potential misuse of administrative power.
