Sicily cash dump investigation

Overview

In late July 2026 a small motorboat traveling from Malta suffered a mechanical failure off the coast of Casuzze, Sicily. While the coast guard intervened, one passenger threw sealed waterproof bags containing roughly €665,000 into the sea. Beach‑goers retrieved the floating packages and Italian police later seized the cash and the boat, identifying two of the three Maltese men and opening a probe into the money’s origin and possible laundering.

Two days later, on 28 July, a jet ski ran out of fuel near Kazuca beach, west of Marina di Ragusa. The rider, a Maltese citizen, allegedly discarded several plastic bags with about €700,000 into the water. The cash washed ashore, was collected by beach‑goers and then seized by police, who also impounded the jet ski and detained the three Maltese adults and a child for questioning before releasing them on bail. Investigators continue to examine the source and intended use of the funds, linking the two incidents by the method of a large cash dump off Sicily’s southern coast involving Maltese nationals.
